The concept of essence from a spiritual perspective refers to the divine, transcendent, or non-physical essence or nature that underlines our humanity. Here are some key aspects: Soul/spirit- Many spiritual traditions view humans as having an immortal soul or spirit that is our true essence. The soul is seen as eternal and distinct from the temporary physical body. Connection to the divine- Some beliefs say the human essence has its origin or existence rooted in a supreme being, universal consciousness or transcendent spiritual reality. This is our deepest essence. Purpose of spiritual growth- The essence is what can develop through things like cultivating virtue, wisdom, compassion, and union with the divine. This is the aim of many spiritual paths. Beyond ego/personality- The essence is considered greater than individual personality or ego. It provides a sense of identity and belonging to something eternal. Inner light/goodness- Spiritual essence is something characterized as an innate inner light, goodness or perfection that gets obscured by material concerns in ordinary life.
